The right centre table size is the one that works with your sofa, leaves useful walking space and puts everyday items within comfortable reach. Do not choose by room size alone. Measure the seating arrangement, check the table’s full footprint and test the layout before ordering.
This guide turns those checks into a practical worksheet, using actual dimensions listed for two Sajosamaan products. For the naming difference, read our coffee table vs center table guide.
1. Measure the sofa you actually use
Record the sofa’s overall length and the height of its seat cushion from the floor. Then measure the space in front of the sofa, including any chaise, armchair or opposite seating. A room’s total floor area does not tell you how much of that space is available for a table.
For an L-shaped sofa, measure the usable opening beside the chaise. Note the routes to the balcony, doorway and adjoining rooms. Your table should fit the seating group without forcing everyone onto an awkward route around it.
2. Use proportions as a starting point, not a rule
A table around two-thirds of the sofa length is a useful initial comparison. A height close to the sofa seat, or slightly lower, can also be a starting point. These proportions do not override the available space or your household’s needs.
For example, a 180 cm sofa gives an initial length reference of 120 cm. That does not mean every 120 cm table will fit: width, projecting bases and walking routes still matter. Read the sizing section in our table terminology and spacing guide for additional planning context.
3. Compare two real Sajosamaan footprints

The oval gold-base centre table with side table lists a main table measuring 48 Ă— 30 Ă— 16 inches, approximately 122 Ă— 76.2 Ă— 40.64 cm. Its side table is listed separately at 12 inches in diameter and 18 inches high. Plan a position for both pieces rather than assuming the side table requires no extra space.

The low-height luxury centre table lists dimensions of 100 Ă— 100 Ă— 35.56 cm. Compared with the oval example, it occupies more depth across the seating area and sits lower. Neither is automatically better: compare each against your sofa height, reach and available space. Confirm final specifications when ordering, especially for a customized piece.
4. Test the layout with masking tape
Mark the proposed length and width on the floor with suitable removable tape. For a curved table, use the outer dimensions as a conservative bounding box, then consider the actual outline. Include any base that extends beyond the top.
Sit down, stand up and walk through the room. Try reaching a coaster from your usual seat. Repeat from the armchairs. Keep essential routes clear and allow additional room for anyone who needs it. A footprint test is more useful than choosing a table simply because it looks proportionate in a photograph.
Once you have tested the footprint, compare centre-table shapes to see which outline suits your seating. Then learn how to style your centre table without clutter while keeping useful space for everyday items.

Frequently asked questions
Should I buy the largest table that fits?
No. Leave room to move and use the seating comfortably. Extra tabletop space is not helpful if it blocks a route or makes sitting down difficult.
Does a low-height table suit every sofa?
No. Compare the listed table height with your actual seat cushion height and test whether reaching down suits your everyday use.
What should I do after measuring?
Shortlist products by dimensions first, then compare shape, materials and finish. Explore our centre table design guide for inspiration, but check each linked product’s current specifications before ordering. Keep your completed worksheet beside you when comparing the final choices.
